Organized by the Louis Vuitton Foundation and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the exhibition "Being Modern: The MoMA in Paris" brings together a representative group of works that MoMA has acquired since its creation in 1929. Presented From October 11, 2017 to March 5, 2018, the exhibition includes masterpieces ranging from the birth of modern art to the most contemporary period, including American abstraction, minimalism and pop art.
A multidisciplinary selection of 200 works, from the six MoMA departments and reflecting the history and choices of this mythical museum, will occupy the entire building of the Foundation.
The exhibition meets a double wish: to show in Paris a set of significant works from the MoMA collection and prefigure the more fluid and interdisciplinary hanging that visitors to the MoMA can discover when its expansion and renovation project is completed.
Among the 200 pieces presented at the Louis Vuitton Foundation are masterpieces by Paul Cézanne, Gustav Klimt, Paul Signac, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Edward Hopper, Max Beckmann and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Alexander Calder, Rene Magritte, Walker Evans, Yayoi Kusama, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Jasper Johns, Yvonne Rainer and Frank Stella ... The selection will alternate recognized masterpieces and less familiar works public but equally significant. Also presented are MoMA archives, rarely exhibited, tracing the history of the Museum and allowing the contextualization of the works.
Some works are exhibited in France for the first time: bronze of the bird in the space of Constantin Brancusi (1928); Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey by Diane Arbus (1967); Campbell's Soup Cans by Andy Warhol (1962); Tomb of Philip Guston (1978); (Untitled) "USA Today" by Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1990); 144 Lead Square by Carl Andre (1969); Untitled by Christopher Wool (1990); Untitled (You Invest in the Divinity of the Masterpiece) by Barbara Kruger (1982); Patchwork Quilt by Romare Bearden (1970).
